Wednesday, September 27 – We left the dog park around twilight and meandered our way back towards home via Circo Massimo – an ancient chariot-racing track near the Roman Forum.

Our stroll took us up the hill behind the Forum, where we were able to snap a few after-dark photos of the space. On my last trip, I had only visited in the daytime, and it’s nicely lit at night!

Our route also took us through the Piazza del Campidoglio, an area that I had only ever visited before in the Assassin’s Creed video games. We would return to the Campidoglio the next day for some daytime photos. This night, I only snapped one shot – of the Forum.

By the time we finished sightseeing, it was close to 8 pm and we were getting hungry. Prepared to find a restaurant for dinner, we were soon made painfully aware that 8 pm is a particularly busy time for eating. Who knew (he said sarcastically)?!

We were rebuffed by long queues at each of the first three restaurants we tried – all located in the area north of the Colosseum. Having no luck there, we decided to head into the neighbourhood near our apartment – located east of the Colosseum and a bit farther from the metro station. There, we finally found a good (if slightly fancy) restaurant near home where we could refuel before bed.

The sofa in Jenn’s apartment was actually a trundle bed, and I was grateful for the place to sleep. True, it was not the most comfortable of mattresses, but after a day of travel and an afternoon exploring Rome, I was exhausted. I probably would have conked out on the tile floor!

One last photo – from the next morning. Just wanted you to see how close we were to the Colosseum. This shot was taken right outside the door of our AirBnB building.
